The city has been awarded more than $430,000 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act or stimulus funds for street resurfacing projects.
City officials learned Wednesday afternoon from the Indiana Department of Transportation Fort Wayne District that Kendallville had been awarded $437,332 as part of Indiana's approximately $4 billion from the federal government's $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan.
"With local funding cuts impacting the street work we normally would be doing, I am pleased that we can look forward to this project, along with the street work on Dowling Street and within the East Factory Sites (East Industrial Park) to help us continue to address the needs of our citizens in 2010 and beyond," commented Mayor Suzanne Handshoe.
In February Handshoe announced there would be no major street improvement projects after she learned the state ordered Kendallville to cut $1.18 million from its 2010 budget. Street work was one of the cutbacks.
Resurfacing projects that will go ahead this summer include:
. Diamond Street from Main to Sherman streets.
. Mitchell Street from Orchard Street to Weston Avenue.
. Fair Street from U.S. 6 to Wayne Street.
. Main Street from U.S. 6 to High Street.
. Iddings Street from Main to Town streets.
Work includes asphalt patching as needed prior to milling the asphalt and placing new surface or overlaying the existing asphalt with new surface, replacing non-compliant ADA accessible ramps at street corners and replacing pavement markings. The work will be performed by Brooks Construction.
Tuesday the Board of Public Works opened bids for milling and resurfacing Marion Drive in the East Industrial Park with the lowest bid from Wayne Asphalt for $358,485. This project will be paid with a federal Economic Development Administration grant and CEDIT monies passed through the Kendallville Local Development Corporation.
Right-of-way acquisition is underway for the multi-million dollar East Dowling Street reconstruction project that could begin late this year. This project will be paid with federal funds and Eastside Tax Increment Financing (TIF) revenue.
"We will continue to look for alternate funding methods for our projects and work hard to maximize the use of every tax dollar we are entrusted with," said Handshoe. Back to Top
