An East Noble High School science student has received a research grant and two other students placed high in the Indiana Academy of Science competition.

Junior Gabe Stephens has been awarded a $300 research grant from the Indiana Academy of Science.

Only a select few high school students are chosen from the state to receive these research grants, according to East Noble science teacher Mark Liepe. "This is the first one we've had in several years," he said.

Shephens plans to use the grant money to fund research examining the impact of multi-walled carbon nanotubes on daphnia and triops. Carbon nanotubes are microscopic cylindrical carbon molecules similar to diamonds and are very strong. Stephens is researching what effects carbon nanotubes have on the environment by testing them on aquatic organisms called daphnia and triops.

Carbon nanotubes have properties that make them potentially useful in nanotechnology, electronics, optics and other fields of material science as well as potential uses in architecture.

Sophomore Katie Merkling placed third in the competition with her research project. Only 12 students were selected to participate based on submission of an abstract. Students were then interviewed by staff from Indiana University.

At the same competition, junior Grant Manon was the top high school student in the science problem solving exam, and East Noble placed second as a team.
